The Hospital Birth Packing List: The Bring it All

For those who want to recreate a home-like comfort level in the hospital with every extra convenience.


  • Essentials:

    • ID, insurance card, and birth preferences

    • Phone + charger (extra-long cord recommended)

    • Comfortable going-home outfit (loose-fitting, easy to put on)

    • Car seat (properly installed in your car)

  • Personal Items:

    • Toiletries (toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, etc)

    • Comfy loungewear (a soft robe or nursing-friendly top and loose pants)

    • Pillow (with a non-white pillowcase for easier identification)

    • Blanket

    • Breastfeeding pillow (MyBreastFriend is a great option)

    • Cozy socks or slippers

    • Nursing bra and nipple balm

    • A small heating pad or rice sock for comfort

    • An eye mask and earplugs for sleep

    • A journal or book for downtime

    • A couple of thank-you gifts for the nurses (snacks, lip balm, or small gift cards)

    • Extra postpartum underwear (high-waisted for comfort)

    • An upgraded peri bottle (like the Frida Mom version)

    • Perineal cooling pads or witch hazel pads

  • For Your Support Person:

    • Snacks

    • Toiletries

    • Pillow and blanket

  • For Baby:

    • Baby’s going-home outfit

    • Collected colostrum

    • Swaddle from home

    • Cute outfit for pictures

    • Your own supply of diapers and wipes (bring your preferred brand and size, as hospitals often have only a generic supply)

    • Soap for first bath (if planning to bathe at hospital)
